King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark have announced a high profile visit to an autonomous Danish territory in June.
The Danish king and queen will be visiting the Faroe Islands from 11-13 June, 2025. While the couple had planned to visit the Faroe Islands in 2024, it had to be postponed. This news visit marks their first official trip to the territory of their reign.
They will be visiting Tórshavn, the capital city, Fámjin, on the western side of Suðuroy, Tvøroyri, on the east coast of Suðuroy, and Eiði, on Eysturoy.
King Frederik and Queen Mary will be hosted by Faroese Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen for the visit.
They will be travelling on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, the Danish Royal Family’s yacht that was first launched in 1932.
The Faroe Islands are an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, and have been under Norwegian-Danish control since the late fourteenth century. The self-governing territory manages all local affairs.
The territory is made up of a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean and is just under 1,000 kilometres away from Denmark.
Queen Margrethe, the former Danish monarch, visited the Faroe Islands several times throughout her reign. Her last visit was in 2021.
